escape, vi and screen

Hi,
on a system I upgraded to netbsd-5 I see a strange issue:
when using vi inside screnn, the escape key doesn't work as expected:
the cursor moves back one char, but vi remains in input mode. To switch
to command mode I found no other way than using ^C.
If I set $TERM to vt100 instead of screen, escape works as expected.

I'm still using a NetBSD 3.1 binary as screen, as I've not upgraded
/usr/pkg yet (base is a netbsd-5 one). On another netbsd-5 system where
I've rebuilt screen from pkgsrc, escape in vi works as expected.
What's strange here is that escape works as expected with other apps
(e.g. tcsh in vi mode).

Any idea about what's going on, and it there's a simple fix ?
