new boot mechanisms with old kernel?

I want to upgrade the boot mechanisms -- I think just /boot -- my amd64
laptop so I can pass new options like -1 when testing new kernels.
However, I'm not likely to run those kernels in production; will the
new /boot work with my old (mid-April) amd64 kernel?
