I too wondered about this recently.  I found it particularly annoying
trying to get current up and running on a machine that doesn't have
network access in STABLE--my eeepc 701.

4.0_STABLE has lii(4) support which was pulled up from -current, so eeePC 701/900 on-board wired Ethernet is supported.
