Sounds like TMP3 measures the temperature in the vicinity of the graphics
chip. Which XFree86 driver do you use? It almost sounds as if the
video adapter is not "idling" properly, but it is furiously trying to
draw something, instead. The notion may not even apply to your adapter
and/or driver.
