	Hello folks.  Thanks for the responses.  Well,I've made some progress
on this problem and think my trouble is more low level than I originally
thought.
	When I went to try the suggested tests, I found that the radio seemed
to work fine.  It associated with my AP and I was able to pass traffic.
I did these tests through a serial login.  When I tried using the regular
console, I found that things still worked, but the sound card began playing
loops, and the machine became extremely sluggish.  Further investigation
revealed that the ath card and the sound card are both sharing irq 9.
Although pci interrupts are supposed to be shareable, I'm pretty sure,
everything else seems to use irq 11, the ath card and the sound card don't
play nice together at all.  What I think is happening is that the ath card
is generating so many interrupts at times that it's starving the sound card
for service, or, vice versa if the sound card gets busy.  Unfortunately,
disabling the sound  card is not an option for me.  So, the question is, is
there a way I can arrange things so that these two devices don't share
interrupts?  Or so that  if they do share, they can live in harmony?  I've
included my dmesg output for this machine in case there's a clue in there.
It's a Dell d400 with the latest BIOS, and that bios is short on options.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
