I've been told (while trying to fix an ntpd issue) that ntpdate is being
dropped in favor of "ntpd -q -g" -- quit after setting the time once,
and allow any offset.  They also suggested using ntpd -g as a startup
default because it allows any catch-up to be performed exactly once,
afterwards it will exit if the offset is too large.
