Thanks to both of you for pointing out the problems and providing
a solution so quickly. I probably didn't have /usr/obj pre-existing as I had 
renamed it to obj.keep and so that triggered the problem.  This problem has 
bugged me on and off for a few years so its nice to know why. If someone can
fix the etcupdate issue then that would be useful.
