FWIW, I'm not seeing the same thing with ICH6 or ICH2 using
GENERIC.MPACPI from this afternoon.

timecounter: Timecounter "i8254" frequency 1193182 Hz quality 100
...
ioapic0: enabling
timecounter: Timecounter "TSC" frequency 3591134550 Hz quality 800
...
timecounter: Timecounters tick every 10.000 msec
timecounter: Timecounter "clockinterrupt" frequency 100 Hz quality 0
timecounter: selected timecounter "TSC" frequency 3591134550 Hz
quality 800
...
auich0 at pci0 dev 30 function 2: i82801FB (ICH6) AC-97 Audio
auich0: interrupting at ioapic0 pin 23 (irq 10)
auich0: ac97: Analog Devices AD1981B codec; headphone, 20 bit DAC, no
3D stereo
auich0: ac97: ext id 601<AC97_22,AMAP,VRA>
...
auich0: measured ac97 link rate at 48001 Hz, will use 48000 Hz
audio0 at auich0: full duplex, mmap, independent

I can't actually test audio playback since I'm remote ATM.

ICH2 has lost interrupt problems with the IDE controllers, but I
don't think that's related to time counters. Audio plays back fine
using auich and emuxki

auich0 at pci0 dev 31 function 5: i82801BA (ICH2) AC-97 Audio
auich0: interrupting at ioapic0 pin 17 (irq 5)
auich0: ac97: Avance Logic ALC200/ALC201 codec; headphone, 18 bit
DAC, 18 bit ADC, Realtek 3D
auich0: ac97: ext id 201<AMAP,VRA>
...
auich0: measured ac97 link rate at 47996 Hz, will use 48000 Hz
audio1 at auich0: full duplex, mmap, independent
