How are you detaching it?  There is time when my iPod cannot be detached.
I use eject(1) and scsictl(8).

  # eject sd?
  # scsictl scsibus? detach ? ?	<-- (see man scsictl(8))

     <-- removal

  # fwctl -r
  # fwctl -r
  # fwctl -r

    <-- detach sbp?
