Yes, which is why when forcing just one side of a link, it is best to
force half duplex.  Link partners that cannot negotiate duplex will fall
back to half duplex.

Of course if you cannot use autonegotiation and can force both sides to
full duplex, then that is better.

As far as I'm aware, the link speed can pretty much always be
negotiated/detected.
