I removed the stop and SHUTDOWN parts from /etc/rc.d/swap[12],
let's see if this helps.

However, the problem in my previous mails was not during shutdown,
but while running mencoder to convert an mpeg2 file (bitrate
~1200kbyte/s) to mpeg4 (i.e. heavy CPU load and constant disk
access).
