I finally had to reset the machine after it hung for an hour.

Another try resulted in

umass0: BBB reset failed, TIMEOUT
umass0: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, TIMEOUT

umass0: BBB bulk-in clear stall failed, TIMEOUT
umass0: BBB reset failed, TIMEOUT

still waiting for the write to continue...
