Sorry, I've kept your message in my "respond to this when I get a few
minutes" box for a while, but haven't had the few minutes.

I most certainly do give a damn, just been trying to unstack things from
my personal plate before adding anything new.   :-)  

I don't see any "brilliant, very obvious, and mindbogglingly simple plan
that takes no time at all to implement," either, so I suspect that the
best all-around solution would be your #4, inventing our own hw
independent layer, with some basic compatibility.  Of course, this is
most certainly beyond my own resources at the present, but I could
certainly provide some feedback and do some testing with what little
hardware I have (A USB Quickcam and a Firewire video camera, which pose
additional issues).

I certainly wouldn't blame anyone who wanted to take the easier way
out... (#1)...

That said, this is outside my area of expertise, so take anything I say
with a very large grain of salt.
