What happens if you set "USE_XF86_4=no" in /etc/mk.conf?

I found this from src/share/mk/bsd.own.mk:

#
# Use XFree86 4.x as default version on:
#       i386, amd64, macppc, cats, sgimips, sparc, sparc64.
#
.if ${MACHINE_ARCH} == "i386" || ${MACHINE} == "amd64" || \
    ${MACHINE} == "macppc" || ${MACHINE} == "cats" || \
    ${MACHINE} == "sgimips" || \
    ${MACHINE} == "sparc" || ${MACHINE} == "sparc64"
USE_XF86_4?=    yes
.endif
