Sorry to have been such a pain.  I thought something was not getting
properly created; it appears that the c++ compiler was hosed in a very
subtle way.  I took the comp.tgz tarball and replaced the compilers,
and, barring corrupted sources, I have a build.  toolchain built.

Now, exactly what happened to my compilers remains a mystery.

Personally, I think we need sources to a roff which don't require
a c++ compiler...
