You need to checkout the 'xsrc' module from NetBSD,
not use the unmodified XFree86 4.4 sources from XFree86.

What's the error that your script generates when MAKEOBJDIR is set?

Note that the directory referenced by MAKEOBJDIR should exist before
you start the build...  If you use the '-O yourobjdir' option to
build.sh, then build.sh will ensure that the directory exists.
build.sh won't do this for you if you provide MAKEOBJDIR via the
environment...
