I always run current on my laptop, updating roughly every two weeks, and
have had few problems, if any, with the wi driver. Certainly no real
problems in the last 6 months. I used to test the wireless net after
installing a new kernel, but before updating userland, but I stopped that
a while ago because it seemed to be an unnecessary step. I'm using a lucent
gold card. I pushed about 10GB of data through it the other day without
incident.

I also have an proxim B/G card with the atheros chipset. I haven't messed
with it much, but it seems pretty solid. I usually use my wi card though
because the ath driver doesn't seem to report signal strength and there is
an initial latency in making connections after idle which I suspect is due
to some power mgmt issue.

Both work well for me, your mileage may vary.
