Sometimes I have this, too (1.6ZG-i386).

Try to plug it in again. Plugging it in at boot time *may* help,
but just plugging it in again *may* too.

If not, reboot the machine and try again.

For normal, you should be able to plug it in and out whenever you
like. The same for USB mice, etc.
