Similar here, last night i had the same problem after an update
of my kernel.. (swaping, swaping and swaping, big load average, really poor
disk performance after having started to swap)

i have 392MB of ram and 512MB for my swapfile:
with X, 4-5 xterm, firebird and a normal ./configure / make i get that:
Swap: 512M Total, 120M Used, 392M Free
