thanks for the information david. any references or related information
on this? sounds very interesting to me, especially in days of 
anti-terrorism hypes.

there are efforts to write a opensource hal, see
http://team.vantronix.net/ar5k/

it came to my knowledge that a member of vantronix plans to port the ar5k
to openbsd, i'm going to ask him about the current state of the project.
