This question got lots of good answers - thanks everyone.

The consensus seems that the 3rd party batteries are likely as good
or better than the APC part.

Well, after being turned off for a couple of days during our recent move,
the UPS is now happy with its old battery.  It had been failing self 
tests for a couple of days - its now been power cycled a couple of times
and has been running for a day or so, and has not complained...

At least I'm ready for when it dies again ;-)
