I noticed the same thing today on my iBook when I upgraded from an
August 4 kernel; unfortunately, I have no serial console to probe
further. I did get, when starting X:

xf86OpenConsole
(EE) R128(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (5)

which I don't remember seeing before, but the log file that would have
told me whether it had happened in the past was obliterated when it
hung the box.
