Ok, I tried to mount this read-only, and ran into build failures.  But I have
completely removed my src tree, re-sync'd, and re-mounted r/o.  This now works.
I am not sure which stale (.depend, or what have you) was causing this 
behavior.

Thanks for the hint, I will keep it r/o from here on out.
