So why not just change the severity of this problem?

In commercial settings I've worked in, prior to any release, *all* critical 
bugs must be closed or reclassified as something less severe. Of course 
this often led to a PHB unilaterally declaring very serious problems as 
non-critical, but that's another discussion ;-)
