I tried smbfs the other day for the first time. This seems like
a nice piece of work, thanks to all concerned.

A couple of things I can't figure out:

 - no matter whether i use "mount_smbfs -u dan ..." or ownership
of the underlying mountpoint, I can't write files as myself.
Files are shown in ls as owned by me, with the expected permissions,
but writes or creates of new files get EPERM. These operations
   work fine as root.

From chatting to others, I'm not the only one seeing this problem.
I'm using a system built from sources only a few days old, in
   case it matters.

 - What does this option in the manpage do, and how do I use it?
   Is it somehow related?

     -M crights:srights
Assign access rights to the newly created connection.

Would appreciate any clues.
