*What* pre-allocated directory entries?  We haven't had mklost+found
since 4.3.

[I think you mean that the directory filled its limit of direct
data blocks, which is eminently possible with a few thousand files.
The FS reconnection code in fsck doesn't allocate indirects for
lost+found (which it probably should, but the problem is obviously
sufficiently non-trivial that nobody has bothered to implement the
solution).]
