I use jwhois, it works fine.

Can we be sure that which ever whois gets included knows about RIPE,
APNIC and the cctld's, some of the newer whois's work ok for
com/net/org but not other tld's, and just refer all ip address queries to
ARIN, which is less than helpful.

jwhois supports most things, including oddities like uk.com:
