AFAIK, 1280 is considered a mininum.

I got the very same problem here with a PPPoE connection. The other end of
my gif tunnel has a MTU of 1480 so I found myself receiving packets of
1500 bytes, which don't fit well in a Ethernet frame when you add the PPP
bytes.

I hacked rp-pppoe a bit so it could receive larger frames, and removed a
warning from the NetBSD kernel which would appear every time an oversized
Ethernet frame was received.

And now it works pretty well.
