Did you upgrade your kernel, as well? That is important. Same thing
happened to me when I upgraded a PowerMac to 1.6 binaries without
upgrading the kernel. Illegal instructions EVERYWHERE. It happened even
before I rebooted. Dreadful. Possibly this is what is wrong with your
VAX?
