Correction: they are directories in sys/arch/i386/compile, not files in
sys/arch/i386/conf.

When trying again, I got:
<dive@eros(/usr/src)> % cvs up
? sys/arch/i386/compile/DESCOLADA
? sys/arch/i386/compile/EROS
? sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC
? sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC_DIAGNOSTIC
? sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC_LAPTOP
? sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC_PS2TINY
? sys/arch/i386/compile/GENERIC_TINY
? sys/arch/i386/compile/INSTALL
? sys/arch/i386/compile/INSTALL_LAPTOP
? sys/arch/i386/compile/INSTALL_PS2
? sys/arch/i386/compile/INSTALL_SMALL
? sys/arch/i386/compile/INSTALL_TINY
? sys/arch/i386/compile/LUSITANIA
? sys/arch/i386/compile/MAZER
? sys/arch/i386/compile/PHILOTE
? sys/arch/i386/compile/STRAYLIGHT
cannot create_adm_p /tmp/cvs-serv12752/sys/arch/mipsco/conf
No space left on device
