So that NetBSD can be readily used as a NIS server. While a number of free
operating systems now understand MD5 passwords, NIS doesn't officially,
and a number of non-free OSs don't understand them. So if you make a user
with an MD5 password in such a domain, that user can't loginto machines
other users can.
