Out of curiosity I did let a "pkg_chk -u -s" run to completion.  I got
dizzy counting how many times it ripped out gnome and reinstalled it.

I couldn't immediately see any program that would do a pkg_delete on
everything and then reinstall everything that used to be there from
scratch.  It would certainly have been faster.
