If you only want readable daily (weekly/montly) commit messages from
the CVS tree, you can also use makelog script. I wrote this script to
generate cvs log mails / html pages for our CVS tree. It has been used
with some other projects too.

It uses cvs log etc and it will also automatically cvs update current
daily copy of the sources. It generates output like this:
