Duh - Rick was right, it was pure luck it didn't happen all the time.

There was an ugly copy & paste bug in if_spppsubr.c, noticed by Arne Helme.
I will commit a fix as soon as possible.

Amazingly it even passed review - the human brain knows what it wants to read
(hint if you want to find it yourself: if you have a long username and a
short password, a zero byte is written to some random memory).
