i've tweaked the mi kernel machinery a bit.  if you're using i386,
alpha, sparc, vax, or arm26, you might want to rerun config to rebuild
your kernel makefiles for anything you've built in ther interim, but i
*think* that if you don't, the only downside will be some repeated
flags.

this should make kernel makefiles a little smaller and less redundant,
and provide a few more useful defaults.
