Sorry, I wasn't clear enough.  I tried to edit the CIS string to read
"Xircom, CreditCard Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56" (not sure if the comma
made a difference).  The strange part is that this card is a RealPort
even though the CIS reports it as CreditCard.

Yes.  I wish it were a simple case of boneheadedness.

I swapped some e-mail with one of the authors of NetBSD's if_xi.c.
Turns out that this card is known not to work and there are some
existing PRs.

Now the card works on OpenBSD.  So, I'm trying to figure out what's
different between the two drivers.  Don't hold your breath, device
drivers aren't my strong point.  8)
