I did these as you said (I had read UPDATING but 'idiotly' thought I was
not concerned by the error you pointed out) and pre-installed texinfo as
well (as said in UPDATING)

`make UPDATE=1 build' did finish

cool :-)

I believe the last full build (Jun 29) had `installed' the buggy
.init/.fini processing in crt0.
