I think I'll have to plead caffeine deficiency.  I was thinking "ssh"
but the log file clearly was talking about the "sshd" daemon.

Thanks Jared and Itojun.  This did the trick.  

I wonder if some default changed.  I could have sworn this was working
at one point...
