It worked AGAIN.  I found the answer right after posting to the list.

I just had to enable the RAID controller in BIOS and NetBSD immediately
saw the disks.

The BIOS seems to have enough functionality to set up / delete / mirror
a RAID setup.  It would be nice if NetBSD could support this kind of RAID
system (although I guess recovering from a disk failure using the NetBSD's
RAID system isn't too difficult, either, once you learn how to do it).
