Please update sort and try again. You need rev. 1.9 of sort/fields.c,
other changes are cosmetic only.
That fix seems to work for me - at least it doesn't crash now,
I cannot confirm whether the output data are correct.

Unfortunately, it's not quite trivial to create a regression
test for bugs like this - it is Really Special Case (TM).
