Maybe I can almost answer this myself.  I'm corresponding with Lincoln Durey 
<durey@EmperorLinux.com> of Emperor Linux.  He told me that one of his guys 
got FreeBSD 4.2 running on the Picturebook last week at Linux World Expo.  He 
said, "Most of the hardware worked when prodded appropriately."

It's not outside the realm of possibility, then.  I wonder how easy it will 
be.
