Wow, that scares the pants off me.  `I have this awk script that works
on box A but not on box B.  Both are running 1.7.1-release.  WTF?'.

It's my intention that system packages will be able to alleviate this
pain a little, but I have to say, we really need to only provide one awk
or the other...
