Are you creating the wscons consoles from your kernel config
(statically) or dynamically at boot time? I have the following
commented out in my kernel config file.

        # options 	WSDISPLAY_DEFAULTSCREENS=4

and then I run this from my /etc/rc.

	/bin/sh /etc/rc.wscons $wscons_flags  # wscons_flags == ""

X starts up from xdm with the stock xdm/Xservers file.
