Do you get messages from the kernel ?
When the machine is hung, can you still ping it ?
Can you run 'systat vm' and see if it keeps updating while the machine is
hung. Especially watch the number of interrupts.

Anyone else using siop with tape drives ? If so, with which kernel version ?
