It is if one automounts the partitions and has the good fortune to
have only some of them mounted when the crash happens.  Breaking the
70 gigs into 8 partitions could (with good planning) set things up so
that only one or two of them were normally mounted.

I don't think it helps any if one tries to parallelize the fsck's by
assigning the same "pass" number to several partitions of the same
physical disk.  It would just slow things down by having a continual
stream of very large seeks.
