Subject: su waiting for DNS?

Is there a compelling reason for "su" to wait for DNS, if there's a viable
network?  It doesn't do this if there's no network, but I assume it's just
giving up.  I'm assuming this is syslog, but why does it need DNS to log
this particular message?  Hasn't syslogd figured out what the hostname is (or
given up) already by this point?
