What I ended up doing was starting the checkout, aborting it early on,
moving src/* ., cd /usr, cvs co -P src-crypto-all

...and that seems to have worked, though, as I suggested and you agree,
it's most definitely NOT elegant.

It's really kinda screwy that cvs co takes the -d argument to be both
remote and local.  There should be a way to force it only to modify the
local directory designation.
