I encountered similar problems in X on NetBSD/i386 1.5_ALPHA. Someone on
one of the mailing lists suggested changing
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers to read

:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt05

(or whichever screen your X server is running on -- indexed from 1, not 0)

I did this, and haven't had any keyboard problems since.
