I hope so... as it is, somebody has gone out of their way to make them
unusable (by explicitly depending on new functions). For now, I link
them with $DESTDIR libs anyway...

I'm pretty sure. I re-supped. By inspection, the sources mention and
implement these modifiers. The man page documents them. The binary was
installed into $DESTDIR, and ps shows all make instances to be from
$DESTDIR. So I'm puzzled. There must be some pilot error on my part. I
get this on Alpha and VAX.
