Is this something a user program should be able to provoke?

This is on a i386 machine running the snapshot that I was expecting 
to see announced as 1.4.2 by now.  Did I miss the announcement?

I'll leave the machine sitting in the debugger for a while so I can 
get more info if that will help.

I expect my program was doing a large malloc.
